SPECTRE & MELTDOWN REMEDIATION
ABOUT
Montgomery County, with over 1 million residents, is the most populous county in the state of Maryland. As one of the most affluent U.S. counties, located adjacent to Washington DC, Montgomery County contains many major U.S. government offices, scientific research and learning centers, and business campuses.
CHALLENGE
In 2018, the Spectre and Meltdown vulnerabilities that affected nearly every computer chip manufactured in the last 20 years were discovered. In a rapid effort to remediate these vulnerabilities, all of Montgomery County deployed vendor provided patches throughout the environment. Unfortunately, the patches were designed poorly and did not meet the environmental variables at the County, resulting in crashing computers and bluescreens.
SOLUTION
Titan Technologies had extensive knowledge and experience in dealing with these specific vulnerabilities and was able to quickly identify this catastrophic misstep. They advised the patch deployment team to immediately revert the patch to secure the more than 5,000 computers that had received the patch from crashing upon reboot.
RESULTS
This quick action saved the County Government countless hours of downtime and money, as well as preventing mass disruption of government services to the residents of Montgomery County.
